Weekly Devotional: Trusting God’s Plans in 2017

By Lauren Abraham
Communications Major, College of Humanities and Social Sciences

“Commit your works to the Lord and your plans will be established.” (Proverbs 16:3)

As the highly anticipated holidays of Thanksgiving and Christmas pass, we now look ahead to the possibilities held in the New Year. Are you looking forward to a fresh start? Or are you comfortable with where you are at?

Whether you love change or prefer to stick with your routine, we can look at the New Year like a blank slate. So, why not take advantage of this and set goals for ourselves? Of course, when setting these goals, it’s important to make plans according to God’s will rather than our own. Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and he will make your paths straight.”

Do you want to grow spiritually this year? Consider following a Bible reading plan, joining a Bible study or even signing up for a mission trip. Additionally, if we want to grow spiritually, it is important to seek wise counsel. Proverbs 1:5 says, “A wise man will hear and increase learning, and a man of understanding will acquire wise counsel.”

Another great goal to have for the New Year is to invest in your relationships. As Christians, we are called to show Christ-like love and be in community with one another. Hebrews 10:24-25 says, “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.”

No matter what your goals for the New Year may be, remember that God’s plans for us are greater than we can imagine. When we put our trust in Him and make our plans according to His will, He will guide us and strengthen us.

Grand Canyon University provides students with opportunities to grow spiritually by engaging them in activities that develop them into co-laborers with Jesus Christ for Kingdom impact.
