The Honors College’s Fall Service Day

By Angela Bratt
Student, Honors College

The Honors College has sponsored yet another service day in which we had nearly 100 of our honors students go out into the community. GCU as a university is heavily invested in the community and makes a major effort to give back. The purpose of the day is to give our students an opportunity to make an impact and to bring them together to serve for one purpose: helping others.

For many of our honors students, it was an ability to serve people and to make a difference in their lives. As college students we so often are focused on ourselves and our studies and are sometimes blinded to the suffering of those that are less fortunate than us. Our Honors students were able to go forth and serve at the Japanese Friendship Garden of Phoenix, Phoenix Better Business Bureau, Feed My Starving Children and the Phoenix Children’s Festival. These organizations were extremely appreciative to have the service of honors students, just as our students were very excited to serve and give back.

Anna Cofrancesco, an honors alum and full-time event coordinator for the Honors College, was a huge help in making this event happen. Anna worked hard to manage various student workers to secure places to volunteer at. Then she communicated to the entire honors student body, taking RSVPs, assigning people to places to serve at, organizing a check-in service, communicating to the organizations and the other logistics involved in pulling off an event such as this. Anna spent countless hours preparing and communicating for this event. She is thankful to have had such a wonderful and successful Honors Service day.
