Weekly Devotional: Need a Friend?

0

By Quin Jackson
Local Outreach Student Leader

“The Lord is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on him in truth.” (Psalm 145: 18)

Do you ever feel like you just need to get something off your chest? Do you wish for a safe place to speak openly about your fears, worries or sins? Whether it’s a worry that is weighing heavy on your heart or joy that is pouring out of you, you may feel like you need a friend to share these feelings with.

Life’s greatest news is that you can, and that person is waiting patiently for you to draw near to Him! Jesus not only wants to be your haven, rock and friend, but He is waiting to be.

So often Christians are taught of God’s almighty power, strength and sovereignty – and may that never be forgotten! But may that also never overshadow the Lord’s gentleness, kindness and personal desires to know you. Yes, He already knows you because He created you. But how much more intimate is it when we come to Him? Jesus wants all of us to recognize our need for Him and to rejoice in the peace He offers.

Philippians 4:6 reminds us of this and says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” There is no better friend than Jesus, and no matter how cheesy that sounds, it’s the truth!

When you are happy, confused or angry, try taking these emotions and feelings to God! Talk to Him about it through prayer, writing a letter or singing praises to Him. When we practice this act of coming to Him with whatever life brings us, He will reveal so many things to us. We will no longer feel the need to discuss issues with others, gossip or seek affirmation from people.

Also, as we practice keeping the Lord as our first stop when we are overwhelmed or overjoyed, we will begin to cultivate a deeper, more personal relationship with Him. All of life is about Jesus, and there is no way to know Him if we don’t spend time with Him. Jesus is the best friend you could ever have so start taking advantage of that!

At Grand Canyon University, we strive to honor Christ in all we do. To learn about GCU’s Christian identity and heritage, visit our website or request more information by using the button at the top of this page.
