Local Outreach Student Leader

“For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’” (Galatians 5:13-14)

There is truly nothing like working alongside a community of fellow students who have the same passions as you. I, as well as all of the other student leaders in Local Outreach, have a love for others and a passion for serving. Local Outreach is a department within Spiritual Life that is divided into eight different ministries, all serving a unique demographic with their own mission. Through these ministries, the people of Phoenix are impacted by GCU students on a weekly basis and are shown the love of Jesus Christ.

Looking for ways to get involved in the Phoenix community? Check out Community Connection with Billy Thrall. Each week, you’ll hear ways you can get involved with local charities and non-profits.

A few weeks ago, Billy spoke with Young Life Regional Director of Arizona Chris Eaton. Chris grew up attending Young Life, as his parents were heavily involved and hosted a Young Life club within their house. He has been a director with Young Life for just over two years, but has been employed by the organization for more than 20 years.

As with any major city in the United States, economically depressed areas exist in Phoenix and outside the protective gates of Grand Canyon University. Even the smallest of things mean the world to these communities that we consider our own.

From a refugee apartment complex in Serrano Village and a charter school to the Young Lives home – a Phoenix outreach project for single mothers – hundreds of GCU students took to the city of Phoenix on Serve the City Day, a semi-annual event to revitalize the neighborhoods that surround GCU.
