Why are my teachers making me use the library?

It’s getting to be that time when you need to sit down and start finding research for your papers. Why, when you have the whole free Web at your finger tips through Google, Yahoo, and Bing, are your Professors sending you to the Library? While it seems it just makes your job harder, the truth is, it makes the job of research easier. Here’s why.

When you walk into a library you see a sea of books. These books have been specifically chosen for their quality and relevant content by Librarians, Faculty and sometimes even Deans of Colleges. You know that when you select a book off the shelf at your college library that you are more likely to find a reputable resource then if you were to pick one from a random bookstore. The same is the case in Online Libraries. The Electronic Books, Collections of Journal Articles, and even Website links are all chosen for their academic merit. Essentially, half the work has already been done for you.

This does not mean that good, academically strong resources aren’t available on the Web through Google, Yahoo, or Bing. In fact, there are many times that it is better to use the Web due to the Nature of the question. But, when you use the Web you add the additional task of determining its academic merit, quality, and verifiability. This skill is an absolute must in the new world of electronic information, but when you are trying to find the research you need for an academic paper, isn’t nice to know you can go to one place and know that the resources are chosen specifically to help you?

It can be frustrating to learn a new way of searching for things, using new tools, and new techniques. But I promise if you learn the concepts behind good searching strategies, you will not only learn to use the Electronic Library, but also learn skills that make your Web searches easier and more effective!
