When thinking about Arizona, most people picture cacti, desert, cowboys and heat. It’s actually pretty funny how many people ask me if I know any cowboys when they find out that I live in Arizona. And yes, there are cowboys here, but that is not the only thing that defines Arizona. Arizona has lots of different places to explore that don’t fit the stereotype of a desert filled with cowboys and cactus.

I’m so excited that basketball season is finally here!

I have heard so many wonderful things about GCU basketball and it was really cool to be able to experience all of it firsthand. In high school, I went to a couple of basketball games, but they were nowhere near as exciting as this game was. The entire atmosphere of the Arena was thrilling. Every student was just as hyped to watch the game as the players were to play in the game. It was so much fun to stand with my friends and other students to cheer on our Lopes.

Adjusting to new surroundings can be difficult. After leaving the comfort of her friends, family and home, Tatum struggled to find her place during her first few weeks of life on campus.

At first, Tatum was having a hard time relating to those around her, because it seemed as though no one was missing home as much as she was. Without having her friends and family with her, she felt alone. When going to GCU’s scheduled events, she was able to have a good time and focus on what she was doing. However, when she was alone, she did not know what to do.

Homesickness is not an easy thing to deal with. I’m very close to my family and being apart from them has been difficult.

I’ve struggled with homesickness a lot these past few weeks and what I’ve learned from all of it is that it’s okay. There is absolutely nothing wrong with missing your family, your pets, your home and even your bed.

College has been so different than anything I am used to. It is so strange for me to not be in school all day long. I am still adjusting to the schedule, but I love my classes. I think that it is so cool to be able to work on subjects that I am actually interested in. It is mind blowing to me that I am working toward my career. The homework load actually isn’t too bad for me. I am so used to having tons of homework in high school that this is manageable for me. I have actually been able to get ahead in some of my classes!

This week has been like nothing I’ve ever experienced before.

My family and I woke up very early the morning I moved in to try to beat the traffic. During the entire ride over to GCU my stomach was in knots. I was excited to move in, but I was also scared. I had to say goodbye to my dog earlier that morning, so I was already emotional, and the fear only intensified as we got closer to campus.

Tatum’s day started early, as she and her family woke up at 5:30 am to pack all of her things into the car. While it was hard to say goodbye to her dog, she was excited to get on the road and head to GCU!

Upon arriving on campus, Tatum was feeling both excited and nervous. Her dad was looking forward to spending the day with the family and sharing the experience with Tatum.

This summer has gone by so fast and I can’t believe it’s over. I started off my summer in the happiest place on Earth: Disneyland!

As soon as graduation was over, my senior class piled onto several charter buses and went to Disneyland for our senior trip. We drove all night, and the ride there was honestly one of the worst car rides I have ever been on.

College has always been something that I have dreamed about. As a kid, I always imagined myself going to the perfect school, the school that fit my personality and nature exactly. I pictured myself walking around the campus, living in a dorm, going to class and hanging out with new friends. I was able to experience a bit of what I imagined college to be like yesterday –at a college that I believe is where I’m meant to be.
